Who is Jean Francois?

Born in Namur, Belgium, Jean Francois Detaille discovered his passion for art at an early age. His father's hobby was painting and on vacations with his parents in Spain and the South of France, Jean Francois would watch the local artists create on-the-spot portraits for tourists. In 1975, after a chance meeting in Figueras, Spain with the flamboyant artist Salvador Dali, Jean Francois realized that the quiet life of the studio artist was not for him. In 1976 he enrolled in the Academy des Beaux Art in Belgium, best known as the school of painters such as Jan van Eyck, Brueghel, Rubens, Magritte, James Ensor, Alechinsky andothers, to develop his talent along more formal lines. Upon completion, he enrolled in the Academy des Beaux Arts in Paris, known over the years as the birthplace of numerous art movements, the base of Academic painters Messonier and Jean Baptiste Edouard Detaille, and the school of impressionist painters Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Jean Francois Millet, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, cubist Pablo Picasso, surrealist Salvador Dali, conceptual artist Ben Wautier and performance artist Yves Klein.

Jean Francois' desire for adventure led him to travel widely. In 1982, he packed his bagsand art supplies, traveled around the world on a sailboat and painting thousands of paintings along the way. The Caribbean, Hawaii and Tahiti were his new themes and his boat made a perfect studio.

"I always painted in front of an audience to music. In school I was faster than everybody else", says Jean Francois. Searching for a methodology that would harness his technical skills and allow a rapid, spontaneous style of work, he created Extreme Art in the early 1990's. Working with explosive energy and without preliminary plans or sketches, Jean Francois uses forceful strokes of vibrant color to fill large canvases in minutes. He explains that working at this rapid pace opens a more direct channel between the image in his mind and the motions of his hands, giving the finished work greater immediacy and power.

In 1997, Jean Francois was asked to perform in the show "Madhattan" at the New York New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. That engagement resulted in other invitations from producers and event planners in several countries. In 2000, he was named the Spotlight Awards Entertainer of the Year for the special/corporate event market. And continued to reap awards as the years went by. Jean Francois quickly became the most sought after event painter traveling the world for special appearances from Las Vegas to Hong Kong, Milan, Paris, Tokyo, London and Monaco.

Jean Francois recently decided to reinvent himself, taking the show in a new direction and stretching the limits of his art form by using a different type of medium; clay. Combining that with his performance art, skillful sculpting hands and stand up comedy, his Extreme Art act has turned into a full evening show. Jean Francois' current projects are a PBS special, a theatre show-"Les Tableaux Noirs", and possibly an Off-Broadway and Las Vegas show. Jean Francois can be spotted running through airports around the world or performing in a show near you!

Jean Francois has performed his Extreme Art all over the world at major events such as the Olympics, World Cup soccer, Tour de France, Emmy awards, Cannes Film Festival, USO, World Business Summit. Furthermore for companies like Microsoft, British Petroleum, and Wal-Mart, Jean Francois has also performed at private functions for the Sheik, Sultan of Brunei, King Bauduin of Belgium, Prince Charles and Lady Di, three US presidents and even the pope, John Paul.

Jean Francois has shared the stage with celebrities like Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, Greg Norman, Richard Petty, the Doobie Brothers, Joe Cocker, Patti Labelle, Bo Diddley, Al Green, Air Supply, Jay Leno, Gianni Versace, Jimmy Carter and the Rolling Stones.

Jean Francois has painted Extreme Art paintings as large than 60' by 40' and performed for a crowd of 150,000 at Parc des Princes in Paris for the European Cup. He has appeared on 48 television programs in more than 30 countries around the globe; Live on Larry King, the Morning Show and 60 minutes are just a few national examples.

Jean Francois has painted Lance Armstrong at the finishing line of the Tour de France on the Champs Elysee, presidential contender Al Gore and President George W. Bush at the Republican and Democratic convention. He performed in the Middle East for the USO and also helped raising millions of dollars for charitable causes serving the Heart Society, The Cancer Foundation, Hurricane Katrina and 911.

Jean Francois was invited to paint in front of the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, The Statue of Liberty, the Red Square in Moscow and to inaugurate the new placement of Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the 911 memorial center for flight 83. See Different-The Secret Of Creativity

How exciting it would have been to experience the masterminds of Shakespeare or Beethoven when they respectively wrote "Romeo and Juliet" and composed the 5th Symphony. To know and witness the secret of a creator in his daring journey, is to know the secret of his deepest ability that reaches far beyond. And because we have different creative ability, what might seem like an impossible task for a writer or a musician, comes easy for the visual artist.

To actually know what is in the head of the painter, you just have to follow his hand. The adventure upon which the painter develops his creation is quite interesting; he walks and he slides, all composed in a fragile dance of balance like the acrobat that walks the tight rope. A stroke to the left, a splash to the right. If he loses his control, it all crashes and get lost!

He explores with all his senses, like the blind, the darkness of his white canvas. Allowing himself to lean in all directions of light and shadows, he composes his colorful vision as he creates it. Painters do not paint lines, they paint all around it. Sculptors do not sculpt faces, they remove all the volume around it. Artists are gifted with the innate ability to take various complicated matters and resolve them in a simple way.

Our ability to see is our ability to understand. Our ability to understand, helps us resolve problems. It is all about how we look and interpret each matter, how we understand and process them. How can we learn to see like an artist? How can we learn to see differently and also to think differently?

For most people, a blank canvas is simply a wooden frame on which a piece of white canvas material is attached. For an artist this is the beginning of the unlimited universe. A window into another world or even a mirror reflecting himself.

The inspired artist starts dreaming and generates an image directly from his soul. He begins his journey of creation, joining both ends of the story, with much trust, integrity and mastership. His hand is always in harmony with his thoughts, as this completes his in depth journey in the world of his imagination.

Seeing is believing, a painter creates the proof of what he saw as his vision. We are what we think. We believe what we see. We create our own destiny by projecting a vision and turning it into a reality. If we can imagine something and create it in our mind, take all the necessary steps to accomplish it, we thereby build in ourselves trust and motivation to materialize it.
